Even after revealing more information from his statements, there was still a significant amount of discord there. Unfortunately for her, she couldn’t really find a way to dig any deeper, as there wasn’t any updates to prior statements, no updated emotions, anything. It seemed like this was going to be something she wasn’t going to be able to completely crack, at least not yet. “Don’t worry about it Luigi! You did the best you could!” She grinned, trying to reassure him now. (“So, what do I do now…continue the Mood Matrix or stop for now?”)

[ Go back to questioning selected]
Her index finger tapped on Widget and it showed the “Goodbye” text before the hologram selected. For now Athena had to gather more information. Maybe with that last line of questioning she could get some information that she could use to deal with the discord. “There’s only one thing that I have to ask. What do you mean by far away?” Athena questioned, not knowing what this was going to lead into. “It’s going to a little bit of a stretch if this all takes place outside of the Los Angeles district.” (“Not that it matters though. I’m willing to defend his friend no matter where it’s at. Even if I have to fly all the way to Australia!”)
Widget: “Land down under! Land down under!”
The plumber sighed in both relief and shame, wondering what the circumstances behind his emotions truly entailed. Alas, maybe it was a matter they had to deal with later seeing to how it probably wasn’t relevant to E. Gadd’s case. “T-… the land down under?” He rhetorically questioned Widget’s outburst.
"N-No, I’m not from Australia if that’s what you’re thinking, but… how can I put this?" Luigi’s expression turned into a cheeky grin as he fidgeted with his fingers; looks like it was time to lay things straight now! "You see, where the whole incident occurred — and ultimately where I come from — is indeed a faraway land: the Mushroom Kingdom.”
"It’s a place that isn’t in the real world, and quite frankly, bears almost no semblance to. I actually warped myself to L.A. using this… " Luigi took out the Dual Scream again and presented it to Athena, luckily not shoving it into her face akin to most other attorneys.
—Dual Scream added to the Court Record—
A nifty little device made by one Professor E. Gadd. It serves as a tracker for the paranormal, among other strange features.
"… h-hehe, I call it the Dual Scream! Something that can transport one, two, perhaps a few individuals across the space time continuum!” He was beginning to sound like a mad doctor at this point.
Nothing like a warm cup of tea to perk me right back up after such a long, cold day~. Let’s see if it’ll be enough to keep me going through all these replies. ♥
Dia followed Luigi pace for pace and heard the growl herself. “Pretty sure it’s not you, Luigi. You said this place has baddies in it. That must have been one of them.” She couldn’t figure out just what the growl sounded like, but started to think things were going to get a bit ugly soon.
"Given what I’ve dealt with in the past, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem." Dia seemed quite confident in her strength for the moment.
"U-Ulp… if you-a say so then." Luigi felt somewhat of comfort from his companion’s words though he really didn’t want to hear that growl in the first place. Hopefully it was from just the common Koopa!
And speaking of which, the cacophonous noise sounded off again, only it was louder and thus felt like a roar. The plumber shakily gripped onto the tip of his cap, not wanting to look behind himself.
"P-Please tell me that was someone’s stomach this time!"
That was something he hoped, for a giant Piranha Plant’s head descended from above and peered its ugly self into their business! It roared mightily as Luigi was literally swept off his feet in fright.
"Hmm.,..I see, so you encountered the one who kidnapped your brother, and that’s why you had anger and sadness." ("I’m not sure what’s harder to believe here, the fact that he met a real life paranormal spirit, or the fact that it kidnapped his brother! And here I thought dealing with demons was weird enough.") Clearly Athena was having a little bit of trouble accepting all of this, but she knew it had to be the truth. There would be no reason why he would lie about it. "I’m going to input what you just told me and update some information." She punched in a few things and watched as Widget updated, adding the new statement in-between statement 4.
Statement 4: I encountered him…the one who kidnapped my brother. King Boo, a ghost!
The buttons for surprise and anger were flashing, making sounds. It made more sense now. (“There doesn’t seem to be any contradicting emotions in this statement. I should check other statements to see if anything else updated.”) Athena quickly checked the other statements including the last one, to see if there was any new contradicting emotions. The only thing that she saw was in the second statement, something that she had problems with from the beginning. She was now going to probe further into this.
"Got it!" She yelled out again, her index finger pointing directly at him. "When you talk about being pursued by the mansions spirits, there’s a lot of fear, surprise in your voice. But there was also a bit of sadness." She crossed her arms for a moment, a grin on her face. "No offense, but there seems to be something off about that. ("If I were being pursued by spirits I’d probably have to change my underwear…") "Can you explain why there’s feelings of sadness Luigi?"
Luigi almost jumped in surprise again, figuring out he was going to have to get used to these procedures eventually. The Mood Matrix is definitely turning out to be intriguing concerning how sensitive it was to emotions. Matters behind King Boo were obvious since any mentioning of him would bring frustration, but what about that last statement?
"Um, I s’pose it would make sense that I’d feel sort of depressed with my own life at risk. Y-You know, amidst all the fear and confusion." However, when the plumber explained that for both himself and Athena, something about his own words just didn’t feel right, as if it did not completely clarify the emotions inhibited from recounting that one tidbit.
Alas, most of Luigi’s statements did not alter sans the newly added one in regards to King Boo. In general, all he experienced was fear and surprise in his battles against the ghouls of Boo Woods.
—NOISE LEVEL : 50%—
Unfortunately, there was a tinge of discord still hidden within his heart that couldn’t be probed at even by Luigi’s own accord. The question was: is this source of sadness actually from the incident itself or something fresh that he was feeling right now? The plumber looked back at Athena rather sadly, disappointed in himself for not being able to cooperate fully.
"I-I don’t believe I can think of a better reason for that statement at the moment, but there’s probably something… s-sorry about that, ma’am!"
Statement One: I remember winning a mansion in a competition…that I didn’t enter to begin with!
Athena looked over the first statement, where here talked about winning a mansion that he didn’t even know about! The surprise emotion was beeping, and she wasn’t that surprised about it. (“I don’t think there’s any contradiction in this statement. If I won something I didn’t know I had entered into, I would be pretty surprised myself. Especially if it’s something as big as a mansion!” She pressed a button and would move over to the next statement.
Statement Two: Next thing I knew, the house’s spirits began pursuing me…But luckily Mr. Gadd came to the rescue!
As she looked over this statement, something was jumping out at her, and it was the fact that there was sadness in there. (“Hmm…that could be a possible contradiction there. Why was he having feelings of sadness? Before I pursue this though I should check the rest of the statements to make sure there aren’t any other contradicting emotions.”)
Statement Three: The professor eventually explained the circumstances of my brother’s kidnapping…
Just like statement one, there wasn’t really any contradicting emotions here. Athena felt like it was perfectly natural to be surprised and sad to hear that his brother had been kidnapped. She equated it to the emotions that she would be going through if her boss, Apollo, or any of her friends that she had made got kidnapped. (“If I don’t find a contradicting emotion in this last statement I’ll look further into the second statement.”)
Statement Four: Though I eventually found Mario at last…and that was the end of it!
(“There’s something not right here…Widget is picking up anger, but why would he be angry about finding his brother Mario?”) This definitely felt like a contradictory emotion to her, almost even more so than the second statement. Now she was faced with a choice though, since she found two contradictory emotions within his testimony. (“Should I start with statement two or statement four?”)
[ Statement Two ]
[ Statement Four ]
[ Statement Four selected ]
"Got it!" She yelled out, pointing at him. "When you talked about finding Mario, there was happiness, which is to be expected considering the circumstances. However, I noticed anger as well. Why were you angry about finding your brother, is there more to this that you aren’t telling me?" She inquired, though realizing that his sadness was something to inquire into. "For that matter, there was also a bit of sadness. In a situation where one finds their loved one, or their friend that got kidnapped or was endangered, the most expected emotion would be happiness, and not sadness. Can you tell me why you felt sad as well?"
Athena’s point of revelation was enough to make ole’ Luigi practically jump in surprise whilst his cap hopped as well. Contradictory emotions, huh? At first it all sounded complicated to someone foreign to the Mood Matrix, but now that he dwelt on the matter further, Luigi did leave something crucial out of his own account. However that very critical factor was something he intentionally left out in the first place because indeed, it brought him both anger and melancholy.
Considering that he wouldn’t be left alone on this tidbit, the plumber wouldn’t fight trying to confide the truth from Cykes.
"Y-Yes… that’s right… I-I apologize for the slight inconvenience!"
"You see, Mario wasn’t the only one I encountered. As a matter of fact, he was being held captive at the very moment I found him." He held his breath for a brief moment midway through the reminisce. Little would Luigi’s appointed attorney know is that the events that transpired at that so-called mansion were significantly personal to him.
Flashback to a couple of years ago: it was long past midnight and most of the mansion’s ghosts have been swept away through the hours. Now all that was left was the big bad himself who withheld his brother within a portrait and was responsible for the whole ordeal.
“King Boo… I know it sounds ridiculous but there was actually somebody behind the kidnapping. A ghost itself. I guess when I finally saw him… those emotions began flying in so it would all make sense.”
"S-So that’s one thing… "
